The Social Research Centre (SRC) was engaged to research a range of gender equity and equality aspects critical to understanding and supporting ongoing workplace culture change.  

The findings are being used by the Forest Fire Management team to inform their ongoing Gender Equality Action Planning, with the intention to continue to monitor progress over time.

Aims + Outcomes

The key aims and outcomes for this research related to: 

  • Identifying and addressing key (real and perceived) systemic barriers to women and gender diverse people thriving and progressing in their fire and emergency career
  • Identifying current challenges and opportunities for improving gender equity across FFMVic in relation to policies, programs and experiences
  • Applying an intersectional lens to FFMVic gender equity projects to highlight how protected attributes that staff embody intersect with gender in the FFMVic
  • Providing evidence to inform the priorities of continued work on gender equity and inclusion more broadly across FFMVic
  • Providing evidence and opportunities to inform a multi-agency approach to the implementation of the 2023-2024 FFMVic Gender Equity and Inclusion Action Plan and approved FFMVic Partnership decisions.

Methods

This project used a mixed-methods approach, incorporating qualitative and quantitative data sources including:  

  • Desktop review  
  • Administrative data  
  • Online survey – of 560 employees  
  • In-depth interviews – with 16 FFMVic staff.

How long will the survey take to complete?

Our staff may have contacted you as part of a research survey. We are a social research company, exempt from the Australian Do Not Call Register, meaning we may call telephone numbers listed on the Do Not Call Register to conduct opinion polling and standard questionnaire-based research. We are not telemarketers, we are not selling a product and we do not provide your name or contact information to any other parties. 

 

The phone numbers we dial are either:

  • Randomly generated by computer, using known telephone exchange prefixes
