The Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity (VISTA) has been running since 2007. Conducted for the Department of Transport and Planning, the survey builds a detailed picture of people’s day-to-day activities, including how, why, where and when they travel. This information supports transport planning, policy and investment decisions, helping Victoria meet the changing needs of communities now and into the future.

VISTA is Victoria’s primary source of detailed travel data. Invitations are sent out across the year, with selected households asked to report their travel for a single specified day. This can be travel for any reason, such as work, education, shopping, social or recreational activities, buying a coffee, going to a playground, or even just heading out for a walk. By showing how, where and when people travel, VISTA directly informs the planning of our communities and transport networks, including roads, public transport, walking and cycling. Responses from many different households, whether they travel a lot or hardly at all, help keep the transport system in step with the way Victorians live.

VISTA aims to recruit 3,300 Victorian households each year from the Life in Australia™ panel. Travel is recorded using an online diary, with a smartphone travel app also being introduced over time.

Each month, Life in Australia™ panel households from across Victoria are invited to take part in VISTA. By including a wide range of people, from those living alone or in share houses to couples and families of all ages and life stages, the survey captures the diverse ways Victorian households travel.

Taking part helps build a clear, reliable picture of daily travel across Victoria. This information directly informs the planning of roads, public transport, and walking and cycling networks in our local communities.
Participating households also receive an eGift card as a thank you for completing the survey.
