This is an important new survey of people who have recently migrated to Australia or have recently been granted a permanent or provisional visa.

The Department of Home Affairs is running this survey to gather valuable information that will help to improve the Migration Program and provide better settlement services for migrants.

Aims + Outcomes

The survey will provide up to date information about recently arrived migrants or migrants who have recently been granted a permanent or provisional visa (that is, new visa holders), including their reason for coming to Australia, their experience of working in Australia, their education in Australia and overseas, and their level of English ability.

The results of the survey will be used to determine how effective the Department’s current policies are. The results will also help the Department understand how well migrants are settling into Australia and the types of issues migrants experience. Understanding these factors enables the Australian Government to provide better settlement services for migrants and to improve Australia’s Migration Program.

Methods

The Department is surveying recent Family and Skill stream migrants who have been granted a permanent residence visa or who are on the path to permanent residence after being granted a provisional visa.

Who participates?

The survey primarily focusses on collecting information about recent migrants (including new visa holders) and also collects information on partners of recent migrants and/or new visa holders to understand experiences for this group of individuals.

What are the benefits?

Your experience is valuable to us. Your response to the survey will be used to determine how effective the Department’s current policies are. There are three prize draws in total, with. In the first prize draw, the first entry drawn will receive a virtual prepaid VISA e-gift card for the value of $1,000. In the second prize draw, the first two entries drawn will each receive a virtual prepaid VISA e-gift card for the value of $500. In the third prize draw, the first entry drawn will receive a virtual prepaid VISA e-gift card for the value of $500. In total, 1 x $1,000 and 3 x $500 virtual prepaid VISA e-gift cards will be drawn. The total national prize pool is valued at $2,500.

How does it work?

This survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and your participation is entirely voluntary. To access this survey you will need the Login code located in the email you received or the panel on the top right hand corner of the letter you received.

FAQs

Are the answers I provide confidential? 

Yes. Any information you provide in this survey will be treated in the strictest confidence and will be used for statistical and research purposes only. It will not affect any other migration or citizenship applications you have with the Department. No individual names will be identified in any published findings.

Can someone else answer for me, like my partner, child or parent?

If you have difficulties understanding English, another member of your household can assist you when answering the survey. The SRC also has interviewers who speak a range of other languages.

Can I take part from overseas? 

To give you the best opportunity to participate, the survey will be run over several weeks. If you are away for longer than this, then it is unlikely that you’ll be able to take part.

How do we ensure privacy is protected?

The Social Research Centre complies with the Australian Privacy Principles. All personal contact information such as name, email and phone number is removed from the final data. Your responses will be de-identified, held in the strictest confidence and will not be disclosed to other organisations for marketing or research purposes. The responses of everyone who participates in this survey will be combined for analysis. Please see the SRC’s Privacy Policy.
